The summer window is gradually approaching and with United’s recent director roles being announced, it is expected that there will be a lot of transfer activity at Old Trafford this summer.

It appears that one of Solskjaer’s priorities heading into the window is providing competition for positions that are already fairly strong as well as adding strength to the squad. One position in particular appears to be right-back, as Manchester United look to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was one of Solskjaer’s first additions to the squad in his first window after he took charge of United. The full-back role was noticeably weak at that time and Solskjaer made a remarkably good choice in adding the young full-back to his squad. In his time at United, Wan-Bissaka has clearly enhanced United’s back line by adding his phenomenal tackling ability, which gained him the nickname ‘Spider’, amongst the fans and players.

However, despite his incredible tackling, there are a number of aspects that the full-back needs to improve upon to fully fulfil his potential. More specifically, the attacking aspect of his game, including crossing and dribbling. Although it is clear that Wan-Bissaka is trying to improve without the competition already, with these improvements in his game, he has the potential to become a world-class full-back. By adding a fierce competitor for this role, it will massively accelerate his development.

This has already been proven to be a success in the most recent transfer window, where the addition of Alex Telles from Porto allowed Luke Shaw to progress into his best season yet, with arguments of him being the best left-back in the league.

So, with United looking to do the same with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who are the possible additions to the squad that will help drive his potential?

One man who could be at the top of United’s target list for the summer is Max Aarons of Norwich City. The young Championship full-back has been very impressive since appearing within the starting squad for the Canaries. Unfortunately, Norwich were not able to stay in the Premier League last season, but it was obvious that Aarons shone in the squad.

He has gathered interest from across all of Europe, including giants Bayern Munich and Barcelona, as well as Premier League side Everton. Securing the signature of the prolific full-back will not be easy for United, and according to Four Four Two, Norwich have set the price tag at £35 million for the upcoming window, although that is more than likely going to rise should Norwich be promoted back to the Premier League.

However, United could look closer to home in the form of Diogo Dalot, who is set to return to Old Trafford tomorrow with AC Milan after joining the Italian club on a season-long loan last year.

Diogo Dalot is currently on a season-long loan with AC Milan.

Needless to say this comes as the cheaper option for United as Dalot returns from his loan spell in the summer. The Portuguese youngster was brought in under Jose Mourinho as part of an underwhelming window, seeing Fred, Dalot and Lee Grant join the club.

Dalot has been fairly successful so far during his time on loan. One of Dalot’s best attributes is his attacking ability, which is starting to show in Milan. Tomorrow presents itself as a huge opportunity for Dalot to show Solskjaer and the fans how much he has improved and how he can provide competition with Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Depending on who United decides to bring in to strengthen the backline could completely change Wan-Bissaka development. Perhaps with the new roles in United’s recruitment system, there could be a few names that we are not yet aware of who could be on their way to United.
