Luke Shaw reveal which players he would pick in a five-a-side from players he has played with in a question posed by one of our writers.
Luke Shaw has arguably been the Player of the Season so far for United, in a breakout season for the English full-back which has seen him become a fan favourite in the club.
In a recent Q&A on the club’s website, I was lucky enough to have my question selected and asked to the man himself:
“What would be your five-a-side team including only players you’ve played alongside?”, I asked.
During his time at United and in his spells with the England squad, Shaw has played with some spectacular talents, ranging from United legends to England greats. It was no surprise when Shaw’s initial response was “This is a very tough question. It’s hard this.”
He started by hesitantly naming his goalkeeper from his squad, seemingly stuck between a few names. He mentioned Dean Henderson, describing him as a brilliant keeper, although due to the lack of time they have played together, he opted to go without Dean.
Following on, he gave an honourable mention to former England and Manchester City keeper, Joe Hart. Shaw played with Joe Hart in his first call-up to the senior England squad.
“I think Joe Hart deserves a mention because he was an unbelievable keeper. When I was away with England and played with him, I was really impressed with the way he was and the keeper he was, I thought he was absolutely top notch.”
Ultimately, he stuck with his long-serving team mate in the United squad, David De Gea.
As he moved on to naming his defence, it only got tougher. “In defence… this is very hard! (laughs)”.
He of course names himself for the defence and opts for a midfield pairing for his squad. He was quick with his decisions.
“I’ll have two in midfield - (Wayne) Rooney and (Paul) Pogba.”
When selecting the final player to lead the squad up front, he found himself in another dilemma as he thought about his time playing with United legend Robin Van Persie.
"Of course, I played with Van Persie and he was an unbelievable finisher,”
But his heart led him to the decision to field his left-sided partner Marcus Rashford.
“but I think I’m going to say, because he’s always on the left side with me and I like having him in front of me, I think I’m going to have to say Rashy.”
Perhaps Shaw missed out on a monster striker up front, by not considering Zlatan Ibrahimovic as his starter striker.
Either way, Shaw’s lineup looked undeniably powerful and not many five-a-side teams would stand a chance against them.
